Research

The Office of the Vice President for Research fosters responsible conduct of University research, in compliance with governmental laws and regulations and University policies. The links that follow are resources for faculty, staff, and students engaged in research-related activities.

Animal Subjects Research

The mission of the IACUC is to promote and to facilitate scientific research while simultaneously striving to reduce the number of animals required, to perform research with techniques that limit pain or distress, and to seek alternative procedures that can supply the required results but do not utilize living animals. To that end, our goal is to promote and encourage an atmosphere of attention, concern and caring for the welfare and comfort of the animals that are under our charge.

Division of Sponsored Programs

Sponsored Research

Sponsored projects, by definition, require some degree of institutional oversight, which in turn requires a thorough understanding of University policies and procedures and how they complement, reinforce, and integrate with government regulations and sponsor requirements. There exists a range of policies/procedures for requesting, accepting, and managing external funding and conducting sponsored projects. Please review and refer to the material in this section to ensure an understanding of the process at each stage of sponsored project administration.

Conflict of Interest in Research

Conflict of Interest (COI) involves circumstances where an individual's professional actions or decisions at the University could be influenced by considerations of personal gain, usually of a financial nature, as a result of interests outside his/her University responsibilities.  The central theme in addressing COI is transparency, and the first step is disclosure of the interest to the appropriate University administrative office.

Environmental Health and Safety

The Environmental Health & Safety Office (EHS) provides services intended to promote health and safety at the University of Iowa, including Biological, Chemical, Occupational and Radiation safety and select Environmental programs. Some of the direct services that we offer include chemical and radiation exposure monitoring, worksite hazard evaluations, workplace safety surveys, safety equipment selection, safety program reviews, safety training, and disposal of hazardous chemical, radioactive and infectious waste. Consultative services include regulatory compliance assistance programs to address OSHA and EPA-related responsibilities within research, academic, facility and service environments.

Export Controls

The University of Iowa adheres to the fundamental principles of academic freedom and openness in research. These principles require the free and open communication of research results and the unrestricted ability of all interested persons to participate fully in the intellectual life of the University.  At the same time, heightened concerns about national security have resulted in stricter interpretation and enforcement by the federal government of our nation’s laws restricting the export of sensitive technologies and information. As it relates to academic research, this federal initiative often results in restrictions that conflict with free and open scientific inquiry.

Our challenge is to carry out our research activities in a manner that is consistent with both open scientific inquiry and the federal laws on export controls. Because the export control laws apply to individuals as well as institutions, all University of Iowa employees working in affected areas of research should be familiar with the issue of export controls.

Human Subjects Research

The Human Subjects Office (HSO) was established by the Vice President for Research to provide administrative support for the University of Iowa Institutional Review Boards. An Institutional Review Board is a group of individuals charged with reviewing proposed research involving human subjects to ensure the protection of those subjects and compliance with federal human subjects regulations. The University of Iowa has three such review boards, each consisting of faculty, staff, and representatives from the Iowa City community.
