Utilities and Energy Management
Utilities and Energy Management is responsible for operating campus utilities, including the Main Power Plant, Oakdale Power Plant, chilled water plants, and the water plant. Our utilities are subject to a number of environmental regulations relating to air and water quality. For example, the U&EM environmental compliance staff is responsible for obtaining construction permits, administering the UI’s Title V operating permit, complying with New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), and complying with National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPS). Applicable water quality programs include administering National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits, the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) permit, wastewater permits, and water use permits. The water plant also ensures that the UI’s water meets Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. Additionally, U&EM staff work with various campus departments to administer campus-wide environmental programs including the UI Title V operating permit, the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) program, and refrigerant management.

Environmental Waste Management
The Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for facilitating compliance with pertinent environmental regulations by managing biological, chemical, and radioactive wastes, conducting waste generator compliance assessments, facility inspections and audits, institutional waste generation and minimization assessments, and annual reporting to the Environmental Protection Agency of these compliance-based activities.
